Medical disclaimer

Last updated: 4 July 2026

Diabetes Academia is a plain-language diabetes handbook for patients, written and reviewed by a doctor. We give you quality medical information, free of charge — but information, however good, cannot replace a medical consultation. This disclaimer explains what this site can, and above all what it cannot, do for you.

In short

  • The information on this site is for educational purposes only — it is not personalised medical advice.
  • Reading this site does not create a doctor-patient relationship.
  • Never change your treatment, especially your insulin doses, based only on what you read here.
  • In a medical emergency, call your local emergency number (911, 999 or 112) — don't look for answers online.
  • The content is based on international guidelines and the scientific literature, but medicine changes quickly.
  • Medical decisions are always made together with your healthcare team.

1. What this site is for

Diabetes Academia is an educational project created by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sorin Ioacara, senior diabetologist and endocrinologist. Each topic is presented as questions patients frequently ask, with short answers based on international guidelines (ADA, EASD, ISPAD) and quality scientific articles.

The site is written for people with diabetes and their families. Its role is to help you understand the disease, the treatments and the technologies available, so that you can have an informed conversation with your doctor — not to replace that conversation.

2. Educational information is not medical advice

All the content on this site is general: it describes typical situations, not your situation. Real medical advice takes into account your age, the type and duration of your diabetes, the other conditions and treatments you have, your test results and many other details that a website cannot know.

For that reason, the information here does not establish diagnoses, does not recommend treatments for your case and cannot confirm or contradict a recommendation you received from your doctor. Any values, regimens or examples mentioned in the articles are for illustration, not prescription.

3. Reading this site does not create a doctor-patient relationship

The fact that the author of this site is a doctor does not mean that, by reading these pages, you have become his patient. Nor do the messages sent through the contact page count as consultations. They help us improve the content, but you cannot request or receive personalised medical answers through them.

For any personal health problem, turn to your own diabetologist, your family doctor or another doctor who can examine you directly.

4. In an emergency, call your emergency number

Do not use this site — or any other site — in a medical emergency. Call your local emergency number immediately (911 in the US and Canada, 999 or 112 in the UK, 112 across the European Union) or go to the nearest emergency department if you or someone with you has an emergency, for example:

  • severe hypoglycaemia, with an inability to swallow, marked confusion or loss of consciousness;
  • high blood glucose with persistent vomiting, rapid breathing, abdominal pain or unusual drowsiness (possible signs of ketoacidosis);
  • any other severe, sudden or seemingly life-threatening symptom.

5. Do not change your treatment on your own

Do not stop, delay or change the doses of your treatment — especially your insulin — based only on information read here or anywhere on the internet. The adjustments described in the articles (for example, the insulin-to-carbohydrate ratio or the insulin sensitivity factor) are learned and applied under the guidance of your healthcare team.

If something you have read on this site seems to contradict your doctor's advice, talk to your doctor — your doctor knows your exact situation; the site does not. Always follow your doctor's advice.

6. Accuracy and updates

The content is written and medically reviewed by the author, and each article shows the date it was last updated. We strive to keep the information correct and aligned with the international guidelines in force at the time of review.

Medicine, however, evolves continuously and quickly, and errors are possible. We cannot guarantee that every piece of information is complete, accurate or up to date at all times. If you notice an inaccuracy, please let us know through the contact page so we can check and correct it.

7. Limitation of liability

You use the information on this site at your own risk. The author and the site are not responsible for the consequences of medical decisions made solely on the basis of the content here, without consulting a doctor who knows your situation.

8. External links and sources

The articles cite external scientific sources (for example PubMed) and international guidelines. Those websites are not under our control, and their content may change independently of us. Citing a source does not mean we endorse everything published on that site.

9. Questions about this disclaimer

For any question about this medical disclaimer, you can write to us through the contact page. How we protect your data is described in our privacy policy.
